Cosmetic Revisions
The categories of treatment options for breast cancer – surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy – largely remain the same since the 1980’s. Although there have been advancements and refinements in these same treatments with the addition of Immunotherapy, over the years, they still make women very sick and significantly reduce their quality of life durng and after treatment.
Mastectomies are still butchering to women’s bodies and BCA believes most breast reconstruction to still be very poor quality. Women are told they are “lucky to be alive” and they should “be happy” with whatever subpar breast reconstruction they get, regardless of how awful it looks.
Types of Surgeries Requiring Cosmetic Reconstruction
- Lumpectomy is a breast-conserving surgery but often requires cosmetic revisions
- Mastectomies are still butchering to women’s bodies the way they are still performed even in 2025 – and Nipple Sparing Mastectomies (NSM) still leave much to be desired in their reconstructive end result. and mastectomies are often less radical. Techniques such as sentinel lymph node biopsy have minimized the need for extensive lymph node removal, reducing complications like lymphedema but it is still a significant complication for far too many women who have lymph nodes removed during mastectomy because Lymphdema Bypass Surgery(LVB) is still not routinely offered as a preventative measure easily done during a mastectomy. BCA believes it should be. And many mastectomies are still very deforming and require some type of reconstruction. And again women are told to “be happy” with whatever poor reconstruction they get. And the unfortunate truth is that it very common for women to end up with a displaced Nipple Areola Complex (NAC), so although they have a nipple, it’s in the wrong place!
- Robotic Mastectomies should be the norm in 2025, not some experimental surgery. We need innovative young surgeons who aren’t afraid of technology to step up and take the reins for women. UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas TX is a leader in this area. If you are considering a mastectomy BCA highly recommends you consult with them before going forward.
BCA Bosslady Roxann Abrams experienced all of this herself after her own NSM on her right breast and a SSM on her left in 2022. She thought it was odd that Breast Reconstruction Surgeons don’t have patient pictures like other plastic surgeons – she soon learned why: the quality of most breast reconstruction surgeons is not very good.
Women deserve MUCH better than this!
What if I don’t like my reconstruction outcome, do I have any options?
Yes you have revision options. Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998, health insurance plans re required to cover mastectomies and also cover breast reconstruction. This federal law mandates coverage for:
- All stages of breast reconstruction on the breast removed by mastectomy.
- Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve symmetry.
- Prostheses (breast forms) needed before or during reconstruction.
- Physical complications at all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) further strengthens these protections by prohibiting health plans from limiting or denying benefits related to pre-existing conditions.
